20 Highly-Portable Keto Snacks

Going keto is a great way to drop extra weight, improve your energy levels, and control your blood sugar. But sometimes it can feel like you’re missing out on some of the foods you love.

What may be surprising is that there are tons of great keto snacks out there. Sometimes you will have to get a little creative or expand your horizons, but there are many tasty treats you can consume without going out of ketosis.

While this list doesn’t have cupcakes or donuts, there are still a huge number of ways to enjoy your food, while still eating healthier.

1. Avocado

The avocado has become the star of the millennial generation, and for good reason. It offers a plethora of healthy fats and can be used with a variety of different foods.

From avocado toast to guacamole – the avocado is a true star of the keto diet. You can stuff avocados, season them, use avocado as a substitute for mayo, make avocado fries – or prepare them in innumerable different ways.

If you can acquire some great keto-friendly chips, you can also make guac, and dip the chips in the smooth and creamy avocado base.

2. Bone Broth

Bone broth is commonly recommended for those following a paleo diet, and keto diets. It is low in calories, has no carbs, and is rich with collagen. Bone broth is also great for your gut and helps boost your immune system.

It’s also easy to incorporate bone broth into healthy, keto-friendly soups. Since you can easily refrigerate and transport these soups in a thermos, it’s a great way to stay keto, on the go.

If you are going to make your own bone broth, it does require a bit of prep (and 5+ hours of simmering) but it's far more cost-effective.

Start with the leftover bones of any animal, and using about 12 cups of water, add the bones to a stockpot.  Let them simmer for at least 5 hours (24 hours is best), and then strain until the desired texture is achieved.

3. Coconut Butter

This overlooked cousin to almond butter is rich with good fats, tastes great, and contains almost no net carbs. If you need a quick boost of keto-friendly energy, coconut butter is a perfect choice.

Just like coconut oil, the most beneficial acid in coconut butter is lauric acid. This 12-carbon fatty acid helps boost our immunity, reduces inflammation, and may even help improve your good cholesterol.

Coconut butter is also rich, decadent – and doesn’t feel like a part of any diet plan, to be quite honest. Highly recommended.

4. Almonds

Almonds are one of the healthiest nuts to consume and are rich with antioxidants. They are also high in vitamin E, as well as fiber. Almonds are also highly portable and do not impact blood sugar.

Almonds also help control blood pressure levels, as well as potentially lowering cholesterol levels. Almonds are one of the healthiest nuts and seeds, and the vitamin E found in them may even help lower your risk of developing heart disease.

Another great way to stay keto is to make a trail mix, of your favorite nuts and seeds. This works great for long hikes, as well as on long road trips. Combine this with string cheese, and you’ll hit all of your keto macronutrient requirements easily.

5. Raspberries And Cream

Heavy cream (and heavy whipping cream) help make a keto diet flavorful. When you can consume these heavy creams, the ‘diet’ aspect of a keto approach is all but forgotten.

Add in a few raspberries, and you have a perfect, keto-friendly, mini-meal. Raspberries are rich with some of the best antioxidants available, and the cream provides a large dose of healthy, ketone-promoting fats. A perfect treat.

6. Macadamia Nuts

Macadamia nuts are a great source of healthy fats. Specifically, they are rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, like oleic acid. Macadamia nuts are also packed with minerals, like magnesium, zinc, iron, and calcium.

Macadamia nuts have also been shown to help in possibly preventing neurological disease, as well as aiding in controlling blood sugar. Since over 75% of the fats in macadamia nuts are the healthy monounsaturated kind – they are one of the best sources of fuel, for any keto dieter.

7. Pistachios

Pistachios taste great, but they are also very keto-friendly. Rich with protein, healthy fats, antioxidants, and fiber,  they’re one of the best travel snacks that’ll help keep you in ketosis.

Pistachios also contain some of the highest levels of beneficial fatty acids. These include tocopherol, as well as phytosterols. These elements play a vital role in anti-inflammatory action within the body.

Pistachios are also unique, in that they have the highest amount of amino acids of any nut, as well as a very large amount of protein. Definitely recommended.

8. Brie And Cherry Tomatoes

Brie is often thought of as an upmarket snack for only the ultra-wealthy, but in truth, it’s a delicious keto-friendly snack, which anyone can enjoy. You can mix in some cherry tomatoes as well, to add even more flavor.

Brie is rich with protein, as well as calcium, and provides a nice reprieve from the sometimes-limited palette, of a strict keto approach. You can also pair brie with unsalted pecans, for a truly decadent snack.

9. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is one of the best healthy snacks on any menu, and you can even still consume it while following a keto diet. Rich with antioxidants, and beneficial nutrients like cocoa polyphenols, dark chocolate has actually been shown to be beneficial for your brain, not just your taste buds.

In one of the most interesting scientific studies, the flavonoids from dark chocolate were shown to have positive effects on body composition, and even cognitive performance. While you still have to opt for the low-to-no sugar varieties, dark chocolate is a welcome indulgence, on the otherwise-strict keto diet.

10. Keto Smoothies

By combining green leafy vegetables, with healthy fats like MCT oil, and a high-quality protein powder, you wind up with an extremely healthy (and low-carb) smoothie.

You can even add a small amount of dark chocolate or use a sugar-free sweetener (like Swerve). Another great tip is to add a keto-friendly nut butter (almond, cashew, macadamia) to thicken up the mix.

If you have dark chocolate combined with a thick almond butter, you’ll get a great milkshake-like texture. Your creativity doesn’t need to stop there – all the flavors create a truly endless combination of ways to make new flavors. As long as you keep the carbs down, and the fat high – you can let your imagination run wild.

11. String Cheese

This childhood classic is actually great for traveling while on a keto diet, and it also packs a surprisingly large amount of protein. Packing a few of these in your carry on is a great way to make it through a long flight, without being kicked out of ketosis.

It is very easy to take in 45-60 grams of protein – even in a pinch – with a few packages of string cheese. With about 15 grams of protein for only 2 grams of carbs – string cheese is definitely one of the best portable, keto-friendly foods. As a bonus tip – try dipping some in hot sauce, to spice things up.

12. Sushi Rolls

Delicious sushi rolls are one of the best indulgences – but you may be surprised to learn that they are also keto-friendly. Dragon rolls, lobster rolls – you can make any sushi a favorite keto treat.

Packed with protein, and anti-inflammatory fatty acids like DHA, sushi is also void of any substantial amount of carbs. Just be sure to avoid the rice!

13. Guacamole

Guacamole is not only great for parties and taco nights, it’s packed with beneficial fats. That’s because it’s made with avocados, which are high in over 20 different vitamins and minerals.

Guacamole also contains fiber, large amounts of antioxidants, and good amounts of potassium. There are a huge number of great guacamole recipes out there (we love this one) – so don’t be shy!

14. Pork Rinds

Though ‘healthy’ is likely not the first word that comes to mind when thinking of pork rinds – they actually are great for a keto diet. Epic even makes well-sourced pork rinds, which are perfect for grabbing at airports, or on a long road trip.

If you like bacon, pork rinds are not much of a departure.   They can be purchased at nearly any convenience store or airport in the world.  With zero carbs and a huge amount of protein, they're actually one of the most keto-friendly snacks on the market.

15. Hard-Boiled Eggs

Hard-boiled eggs are a classic low-carb treat. They are packed with choline, protein, and other great nutrients. A word of advice though – don’t consume these in a packed conference room, or on a plane.

It is also important to note that all the health benefits of eggs (except the protein) are contained within the yolk. So be sure to consume not just the egg white – but the full yolk - if you want all of the health benefits that come with eggs.

16. Almond Butter

Almond butter is a great, healthy indulgence. It can be spread on a variety of healthy foods and can also be consumed on its own. One bit of advice though, if you want to stay in ketosis, make sure to read the label and avoid almond butters which contain large amounts of sugar.

Justin’s is one of the best brands out there, and their classic almond butter tastes great, especially when you use celery to dip with.

17. Sardines

Sardines are packed with protein, healthy fatty acids (like DHA), and are also anti-inflammatory. While the taste may not be for everyone, the huge health benefits cannot be debated.

Sardines are rich in vitamin B12, as well as calcium. One note about sardines – they are not ideal for closed areas, or for airline travel. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

18. Pepperoni Sticks

Pepperoni sticks are definitely a keto treat – but they are also highly processed. Make sure you also opt for organic meat and avoid hormone-filled options.

You can even add your favorite cheese, and make a portable, crustless pizza. This will double your amount of protein, and also increase your intake of energy-stoking fats.

19. Seaweed Crisps

These crispy, low-calorie snacks are perfect for avoiding potato chips – and they’ll still keep you in ketosis. There is now also a wide variety of flavors, from chipotle to olive oil.

Seaweed is high in iodine and tyrosine, both of which are critical for optimal health. Seaweed also contains a good amount of protective, free radical fighting antioxidants.

20. Beef Jerky

Back in the earlier days, when keto was not yet really a big movement – beef jerky was one of the only portable low-carb snacks out there.

Now, of course, there are a wide variety of other options. But beef jerky is still a great go-to – just don’t overindulge. Many brands are made with poor quality meats and have lots of sugar, so always opt for organic and low sugar varieties.

Wrap Up

There you have it – 20 great keto snacks, that are perfect for traveling, and taste delicious! While avoiding all the highly-processed, high-carb snack foods is never easy, there are still plenty of great keto snacks out there.
